                           What DOES a doula do?

  • Support you through pregnancy, labour, birth & the early post natal period.

  • Provides emotional support

  • Uses comfort measures: breathing, relaxation, movement, positioning

  • Gives information

  • Continuously reassures and comforts the mother (the key word is continuous—a doula never leaves the mother’s side*)

  • Helps a mother become informed about various birth choices

  • Advocates for the mother and helps facilitate communication between the mother and care provider

  • Looks after your partner as well (gives them bathroom breaks!), but their primary responsibility is to the mother

"Now that we know who they are and what they're about, we want to shout out how wonderful they are from the rooftops! A special type of person has the skills to be a doula. Their job is to enter the most personal of spaces with a mum & dad to be, and make them feel comfortable enough to experience the wonder of childbirth with them. Feeling reassured and 'calm' through the birth is not something first time mum & dad's would usually associate with birth (especially the first one) but that's exactly what we had and we have Bethany to thank for that! "      Cassie

"I am vigourously promoting your details to all the cosmos midwives as you are a total legend when it comes to supporting women through the thick and thin of birth!"

               What Don't Doulas do?

  • Doulas are NOT medical professionals

  • They do not perform clinical tasks such as vaginal exams or fetal heart monitoring

  • They do not give medical advice or diagnose conditions

  • They do not judge you for decisions that you make

  • They do not let their personal values or biases get in the way of caring for you (for example, they should not pressure you into making any decisions just because that’s what they prefer)

  • They do not take over the role of your husband or partner (unless you have requested this)

  • They do not deliver the baby

  • They do not routinely change shifts

"You were there for one of the proudest and most beautiful moments of my life and I'll never forget that. Thank you so much for helping me and giving me the confidence I needed to achieve my vbac"  Jenny xoxo

"I'll never forget the groundedness grace, calmness and the sweet tender yet strong energy you held in the space throughout our birthing process. You were a pillar of strength I leaned on consistently, with all sincerity, I believe my birthing of Sapphira was a more whole and fuller experience with you by my side"

                                Love always Brooke x

"How can we ever thank you for helping us bring this beautiful spirit into the world?! We are so greatful - birthing this bubba was one of my most empowering and proudest experiences"       Lydia
